WHERE TO START?

BEST STORIES

There is plenty of stories which Lovecraft wrote, but which one to choose first? - Well you have couple of different choices all of them being the right one as well. The first one that I would reccomend reading is The Shadow over Innsmouth, it was my first story to read as well. In some cases it might not be the best idea since we get pushed into this book which encomposes the best and the worst of Lovecraft's style. The book itself will flood us with information in the first part which might overwhelm some readers, but the second part of it will make the story much more enjoyable because we will 'know' about people and the story of the titled city.

Another one which might be a good beginning is The Call of Cthulhu the one which the Mythos took the name from. It introduces us to the messenger of the Great Old Ones - Cthulhu, sleeping on the bottom of the ocean and waiting to bring doom over the earth. This story is a close second, sometimes i wish it would be the first one that I've read instead of the previous one.

My last recommendation is The Dunwich Horror which is arguably the best book of H.P. Lovecraft. It is one of the books which Lovecraft took pride in, he even called it So fiendish that [the director of Weird Tales]Farnsworth Wright" might not print it. Even though Lovecraft said what he said, he recieved his highest paycheck for this story out of all that have been printed. This story introduces the reader to the Outer Gods as well as many of the elements of the Mythos.
